About Medical Cannabis

Medicinal Cannabis preparations contain terpenoids and cannabinoids, of which CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are the most studied. Each has its own qualities with some overlap and also augment each other's action. The choice of one or both depends on the patient's condition and their circumstances. There have been over 103 conditions approved by the TGA, including:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Cancer Pain & Symptoms
  • Neuropathic Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Seizure Management
  • PTSD
  • Anorexia
  • Severe Insomnia
  • Chemotherapy Induced Nausea and Vomiting
  • Palliative Care

The manufacture of Medicinal Cannabis is highly regulated and must conform to strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) this means the products are free from harmful ingredients, that doctors and consumers know what is in it, and that the effect it has for a patient will be consistent from bottle to bottle.
There are several manufacturers establishing in Australia and until local product becomes available, most are importing ready-prepared products from sister companies in Canada.

These products are at the required standard of the TGA and are designed to assist patients who have one of the eligible conditions.
Maria Clinic will be using MedReleaf Brand of Medical Cannabis products, as they are renowned for their high quality, accredited by both Health Canada and the EU and manufactured under stringent GMP manufacturing processes. However, we may also recommend other products if they are deemed more appropriate. Current formulations available include oils, gel caps and dried bud, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. These will be discussed with individual patients at their consultation.

Our Doctors, operate a specialty clinic within the medical clinic to assist eligible patients to gain access to Medical Cannabis products via the TGA's Special Access Scheme. The initial visit (which may take up to 45 minutes) will cost $200, you may receive some money back from Medicare. We will follow up with you a week after your initial consultation and this will be bulk-billed.

Your follow-up visit is important as this is the time when we review your progress and make adjustments to your treatment plan as well as being a requirement of the TGA for all approvals obtained.
Subsequent visits will be $90 due the time and complexity of the consultation. The fee is inclusive of the considerable time needed to submit applications and follow-up on any additional information required by the TGA.

While the Australian Government has not committed funding to have Medicinal Cannabis added to the Pharmaceutical Benefit Schedule, certain private health insurance companies, some accident compensation boards, and the Department of Veteran Affairs have come forward to assist patients. Please make your own enquiries. The prices of Medical Cannabis can vary greatly from $100-$500 per product, depending on the strength, volume/quantity and form. The Doctor will select an appropriate product(s) to help your condition, taking into consideration ease of use of the product(s), dosing frequency and cost effectiveness of the treatment plan.

All drugs may have unexpected adverse effects, and like any other medicine, Medicinal Cannabis may or may not be right for you. It is important you speak to our clinic team about any concerns you have about your treatment during your visits.
Our experienced team members will work with you to determine the most suitable product. As the TGA has indicated, every prescription is a trial of treatment and we know that there will be some who may be disappointed. There may be a need to choose alternative formulations or ratios of CBD/THC where circumstances permit. This will be decided during follow-up visits. We welcome your valued feedback.
